Bed Bug Myths Debunked; Do they Fly or Jump, How Quickly do they Multiply & Do they Only Bite at Night?

Bed bugs are becoming more and more common in homes across the country. Home owners are quickly having to deal with infestations that they did not expect to happen. Bed bugs are small insects that feed on our blood, most of the time while we are sleeping. They are excellent at hiding in small crevices and cracks throughout the daytime, waiting patiently to latch onto us at night and suck out our blood while we are peacefully sleeping. While bed bugs do feed on blood, are very small and excellent at hiding within the creases of sheets, there are some myths about bed buds floating around that are simply not true!

Can Bed Bugs Fly or Jump

It is important to become familiar with these myths so you can identify whether or not it is indeed a bed bug issue you are dealing with or something entirely different than a bed bug. One of the more popular misconceptions out there about bed bugs is that they have the ability to fly or jump long distances. Bed bugs do not have wings, therefore they are completely incapable of flying. While they are unable to take flight, they are great at crawling from hiding place to hiding place. A bed bug has the ability to crawl over three feet every minute.

How Fast do Bed Bugs Reproduce?

Another false truth that is often spread about bed bugs is that they can reproduce very quickly. Compared to other insects, bed bugs actually reproduce at a very slow rate. Each adult female produces one egg per day, while a common house fly lays five hundred eggs over three to four days. Every bed bug egg takes ten days to hatch and an additional five to six weeks for the offspring to develop into an adult. While bed bugs do not reproduce as rapidly as other insects, they are one of the more difficult pests to permanently remove from a home.

Do Bed Bugs Only Bite at Night?

The notion that bed bugs only bite at night is not a fact at all. Just like humans, if a bed bug is hungry, it will eat, no matter what time of the day it is. Another misconception about bed bugs is that they only hide out in beds. A bed bug can find many ideal areas within your home to hide out. If they are hiding in a crevice on your couch and it is the middle of the day and they are hungry, they will come looking for you and a meal.
